What this number measures
When the rate moves from 1,300 to 1,400 won, one dollar costs more won. In other words, the won has lost value against the dollar. A rise in the rate and a stronger won point in opposite directions.
It is linked to import prices, travel costs abroad and the won value of overseas assets, which makes it the external indicator mentioned most often in Korea.
How it is calculated and when it is released
The KRW/USD spot rate published by the US Federal Reserve in its foreign exchange data, based on the New York noon rate.
Updated every US business day. Because it is observed at noon in New York, the timing differs from the Seoul foreign exchange market close.
What this number does not tell you
- It is not the Seoul market close or a bank's posted rate. Actual currency exchange adds fees on top of the base rate.
- There are no new observations on US holidays, so the value stays the same.
- It holds only the level of the rate, not whether that level is appropriate.
Common misreadings
- Reading a rise as a stronger won
A higher rate means a weaker won. One dollar now takes more won.
- Using it directly to calculate an exchange
Actual exchanges include the bank spread and fees. Multiplying an amount by this value does not give the exact result.
- Reference time
It can differ from the close you saw in Korean news. This value is based on noon in New York.
