What this number measures
Measuring the dollar against a single currency depends on what is happening to that other currency. The broad dollar index therefore combines many trading partner currencies, weighted by trade, into a single index.
The value Jupick shows is the nominal index, which does not adjust for price differences. The real index that also accounts for inflation is a separate series and is not on this page.
How it is calculated and when it is released
The nominal broad dollar index calculated by the US Federal Reserve, set to 100 in January 2006.
Updated every US business day.
What this number does not tell you
- It is a nominal index. The real value after differences in inflation between countries is not part of it.
- The index value has no absolute meaning. It only shows where the dollar stands relative to the base period.
- The value of the dollar against the won alone is shown separately in USD/KRW.
Common misreadings
- Confusing it with the commonly quoted dollar index
The dollar index often quoted in the media is a different index that holds only six currencies, including the euro. The index on this page is a series weighted much more broadly by trade, so the values differ.
- Unit
The unit is points. A move from 120 to 122 is a rise of 2 pt and is not read as a percent.
