Both Korean indices fell more than 3 percent
On October 22 the KOSPI closed at 5,533.77, down 201.89 points, and the KOSDAQ closed at 764.10, down 28.66 points. In percentage terms that is 3.52 percent and 3.62 percent.
US indices split. The Nasdaq closed 2.60 percent lower at 26,008.86 and the S&P 500 fell 1.21 percent to 7,663.43, while the Dow rose 11.89 points to 52,867.98. Only the index weighted most heavily toward large technology names fell hard, and the one weighted toward industrials and financials finished flat.
Korea was broadly lower while more US stocks rose than fell
Among the 300 Korean companies Jupick tracks, 42 rose, 255 fell and 3 were unchanged. The market temperature, a 0 to 100 reading that combines the share of advancers with the average change, came to 17.
Among the 300 US companies, 176 rose and 124 fell, for a temperature of 55. An index can fall 2.60 percent on a day when most of its members rise, because index weights follow company size. When a few of the largest technology names drop hard, several hundred smaller gains do not offset them.
US declines came from vaccines and semiconductor equipment
Moderna fell 17.57 percent to 202.63 dollars, Coherent fell 12.51 percent to 207.82 dollars, and Lam Research fell 11.76 percent to 230.15 dollars. The three make vaccines, optical components and semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
On the other side, Roper Technologies rose 9.73 percent to 436.23 dollars, Blackstone rose 8.38 percent to 118.75 dollars, and General Mills rose 8.01 percent to 35.18 dollars. Industrial software, asset management and packaged food have little in common with each other, except that none of them supplies chip fabs or data centers. The split ran along industry lines rather than across the market as a whole.
Korean gainers were few but moved far
Elice rose 17.15 percent to 93,600 won, Samsung E&A rose 16.14 percent to 55,400 won and LS Eco Energy rose 9.96 percent to 58,500 won. On the losing side EcoPro BM fell 9.66 percent to 98,200 won and TES fell 9.41 percent to 108,800 won.
Double-digit gains inside a group of only 42 advancers mean individual circumstances still mattered on a broadly negative day. A daily change records that day's supply and demand, while a Jupick grade is set from filed financial records, so the two are separate measures.
- Elice+17.15%
- Samsung E&A+16.14%
- LS Eco Energy+9.96%
- EcoPro BM-9.66%
- TES-9.41%
- INGENIA Therapeutics-9.01%
Crude oil rose, metals fell
WTI crude rose 1.35 percent to 98.46 dollars a barrel, near the upper end of its 52-week range of 54.98 to 119.48 dollars. Gold fell 1.96 percent to 4,068.80 dollars, silver fell 3.78 percent to 55.25 dollars and copper fell 1.95 percent to 6.42 dollars. The won closed at 1,325.52 per dollar, 1.58 won weaker.
All six cryptocurrencies were lower on the day, with Bitcoin down 3.20 percent and Ethereum down 3.27 percent, but five of the six were still positive over seven days. Every price here is an October 22 closing value and not a live quote.
