Natural gas: what it is
Natural gas is an energy commodity used for heating, power generation and industrial fuel. Transport limits such as pipelines and LNG carriers make regional price gaps large, and the US Henry Hub price is widely quoted as a global benchmark.
The price of LNG imported by Korea is affected by long-term contracts and Asian spot prices (JKM), so it can move quite differently from Henry Hub.
What has moved the price
- Seasonality
Demand swings widely with the seasons, from winter heating and summer cooling (power generation). Prices have therefore reacted sensitively to weather forecasts such as cold snaps and heat waves.
- Storage
The weekly natural gas storage report from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) is used as a key measure of supply and demand.
- LNG exports and geopolitics
Growing US LNG exports have tied US domestic prices more closely to international demand. Geopolitical events have also shaken prices sharply, as in the European gas crisis during the 2022 war between Russia and Ukraine.
This describes general tendencies observed in the past and does not forecast the direction of future prices.
Reading the unit
Natural gas trades in MMBtu (million British thermal units), a unit of heat. The price on this page is based on US Henry Hub futures. LNG prices in Korea, Europe and Asia form in separate regional markets.
Points to keep in mind
- Natural gas is known for extreme volatility even among major commodities.
- The Henry Hub price and Korean city gas rates are set in different ways and are not directly linked.
