MARKET PHASE · FLAT
Sideways market
Moves most when nothing is happening
A long stretch with no rise and no fall, when there is nothing in particular to check
Reaction by phase and the gap
Highest minus lowest of the three phases
-
Answer the questions and your reaction in each of the three phases and the gap between them will appear here.
Surging market
-Falling market
-Sideways market
-With 4 questions per phase, the value moves only in steps of 25. Answering one question differently moves that phase’s value by one step.
A high value in this phase means you often rethink your decisions in stretches where nothing is happening. Which of the three phases was larger is shown in the bars above.
What it means
Quiet stretches are usually the longest. Days of big rises or falls number only a few a year, and most of the rest is uneventful. How you use that long time actually produces the most decisions.
People with a large reaction in this phase use quiet time for preparation. On days with nothing to see they find new places to look, and when there is nothing to adjust they adjust the mix. Some things can be read calmly only in stretches without movement, so this habit often helps.
The same behavior, though, can come from somewhere else. In the first two phases you rethought because the price moved, but in this phase you rethink when nothing has moved. What made you rethink at that point is the heart of this phase.
How it shows up
- On days with nothing to see, you find new places worth a look
- In stretches with nothing to do, you tidy up weights or the mix
- When you hear that other assets moved, you look at whether they are worth moving to
Traps that arise only in this phase
- Having nothing to do reads as falling behind. Waiting was part of the plan, but as the quiet stretch lengthens it starts to feel like neglect rather than a plan.
- News that something else moved becomes a reason to move. If the original place moves after you leave, you come back, and all that remains from the round trip is trading costs.
- When there is nothing to fix, something to fix appears. Adjusting weights is the most common form, and it is hard to tell for yourself whether you change things because there is a reason or simply because you can.
If your value came out low
If your value in this phase came out low, you rarely make changes in quiet stretches. You may let preparation time slip by, but you also rarely invent things to do.
The Jupick grade in this phase
This is actually the stretch where Jupick grades really change. Grades are recalculated when the financial metrics are updated, not when the price moves, so a grade can move while the price stays flat for months. For Korean stocks that update comes from financial filings, and for overseas stocks a change in dividend history alone, without a single filing, is enough. A quiet screen and a quiet company are different things, and the stretches where the two diverge are longest in a quiet phase.
